Sylvain Tremblay was born in Quebec City and now resides and works
in Montreal, Canada. A self-taught painter, his works on canvas
are set apart by their lustrous finish, a feature that has become
somewhat of a signature for the artist.
Tremblay creates texture on his paintings by applying layers of
gesso, giving his works a distinctly sculptural feel. The artist
also integrates different media such as sand, metal or textiles
in order to convey urbanity and modernity in his canvases.
His universe is populated by reedy silhouettes that evolve
in a world where time appears to have stopped. These slender
beings seem to be saying : “ Look at us, we are still
here, despite the years, despite the centuries.”
Upon first glance, it is obvious that the artist is proposing
a dialogue between the spectator and his painted subjects. Like
a mirror, the glossy surface casts back the viewer’s reflection,
allowing him to interact with these beings. In this way, he
becomes an element of the painting. This union between the real
world and the fictitious world recalls the notion of temporality,
an idea which is at the center of Tremblay’s conceptual
approach.
These beings, at once ancient and timeless, join the spectator’s
contemporary world. Time, history and urban modernity are all
intertwined in this rich and mystifying universe. The representation
of the human body is inextricably bound with the history of
painting. Sylvain Tremblay’s work invites us to review
this history by demonstrating and reaffirming a contemporaneity
rooted in timeless humanity.
For the past 4 years, Sylvain Tremblay’s art has been
exhibited in Canada, the United-States, Europe and Asia.
